SubSpace Future Hello Everyone

SubSpace Future Hello Everyone,

January 15th is finally here and the first thing I (Blackie[real], in case you were wondering who was writing this) want to do is apologize for the seemingly lack of interest by Virgin Interactive and the SubSpace team and let you know that we are not abandoning the community. In fact, we have just moved our servers to another provider (many of you have had to update your favorite list [I had to delete the favorite.lst file before it would update]).

We are into the pre-production of our next project. Yes, it will be online. And before you ask, yes we will have public beta testing for specific parts of it but probably no private alpha testing. I can't say much about it just yet but as soon as I can I will.

I have been giving the task of becoming the "Subspace Voice of Virgin Interactive" (SSVoVI for short) and will be a lot more active in the zones and the community.

Right now, we're making plans for the community for 1998. One of the things, we are planning is to have the community much more involved in the future of SubSpace. We are in the process of setting up some kind of "Town Meeting" where I (and other 'helpers') can answer questions about the future of SubSpace and where the current direction is heading. We will also discuss current SubSpace issues and events and try to solve problems within the game. We're also looking at the possibility of setting up a "Development" process for designing new game zones. We will have to work within the certain guidelines, but this will give people an opportunity to try out their hand at designing a great zone.

I hope this clears up some of the rumors and please don't hesitate to write email to subspace@vie.com or contact me through ICQ (1144152) with suggestions and comments.

SUBSPACE IS SHIPPING

Pre-order customers should be receiving thier copies of SS within the next few days.

Subspace is also already in EB and will appear in other stores over thanksgiving.
In fairness to those players whose retailers do not have copies immediately the demo players will gradually have abilities rolled back rather than all at once.
1.) Today Tuesday 25th nov all demo players will no longer be able to fly the terrier, weasel & the lancaster.
2.) Tommorrow the 26th we will have a score reset.
3.) Friday 28th Demo players will no longer have thier scores recorded.
4.) December 5th Demo players will no longer have thier names show and will all be named "demo~"
Retail players will of course have all options available.
Users names and passwords WILL be remembered when you upgrade to the retail version so accounts will not be lost.

You should also be aware that lots of new servers will be coming online in the next few weeks so keep updating that favorite.lst.

Thats all. Welcome to all our customers :)

Version 1.32

Another rev before we go final that fixes some graphics glitches.

MISC. INFO.
The game is slated to start shipping the day AFTER Thanksgiving. We will be putting up a Direct Number soon for all of our international customers that cannot use the 888 toll free number.

Scores will be reset November 21st

BUG FIXES
Banner setting bug is now fixed.
Animation player now improved.
Infamous "cannot allocate surfaces" bug finally fixed. (we hope)

NEW FEATURE
Graphics configuration screen.

This is available in the VIEW menu drop bar in the external game shell (where you pick your zones)

If you are NOT having performance problems DO NOT change any settings.

If someone has a similar card to yours and you want to dupe his settings you can just enter a code that is creted in the box.

if you accidentally change some settings the default code is... 4000-000g-0zw0

With so many new 3D & accelerated graphics cards out there we thought
it would be useful for players to have much more control over there graphics settings.

In the new "Advanced Options" menu you will discover a configurability screen.

Each card will perform differently depending on what you load into system memory (this is all the boxes on the left)
A box that is UNTICKED will attempt to place that item into video memory.

So the boxes you tick are the ones that are not placed on your video card. So if you untick all the boxes
then it will attempt to put everything in video ram. The major one that should usually remain in system RAM is FONTS.

As a rule you will find three configs will work for different cards here.
1.) ALL UNCHECKED
2.) ALL CHECKED
3.) DEFAULT

To the right of the box are some other options....

  • Software Emulation - A super advanced feature that does not work with any commercial cards yet. Ignore for the present.
  • Skip Splash Screen - Removes the "Subspace" Woosh lettering that zooms up when you launch the app.
  • Avoid Page flipping - Most likely to help the Riva chip set and other very powerful cards. Should speed things up greatly for "super" graphics cards.
  • Triple/System Buffer - This option has 2 uses. If you ARE page flipping this option makes it triple buffer,
  • if you are NOT page flipping then this option forces the back buffer into system memory. This option can cause SEVERE slow downs on many cards so dont use it of your fine.
  • Gamma Correct - Allows you to define your own level of gamme correction (in %) The higher the % the more the graphics will wash out. (I have mine set to 90% jeff leaves his at 130%)

Thats it!

Enjoy.

Version 1.20.

Phew! What a few weeks!
Version one hundred and twenty

(Thanks to Dev's Apprentice for the Chaos Zone map)
